4. Protective Gas or Flux
The arc melts metal so hot that even the surrounding air can cause problems. Air pockets can get into the weld and weaken it.
Every arc welding type has a way to protect the weld:
- MIG welding uses a gas tank (usually a mix of argon and carbon dioxide)
- TIG welding uses a gas tank (usually pure argon)
- Stick welding uses a burning rod coating that makes its own gas
- Flux-Cored welding uses powder inside the wire that makes its own gas
